Al-Shanana Tower

Al-Shanannah Tower in Al-Rass is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the Al-Qassim region. It was originally built around 1111 AH (1699 AD), although some sources suggest it dates back to 1170 AH (1756 AD). Located approximately 7 kilometers southwest of Al-Rass, the tower once served as a strategic watchtower used for observation and defense purposes.

Standing 27 meters tall with a 21-meter base, the tower is shaped like a cone and narrows gradually toward the top, consisting of ten levels. It was constructed using traditional materials such as mud, palm trunks, and athl wood — materials typical of Najdi architecture that allowed the structure to withstand the harsh desert climate.

The tower underwent its first restoration in 1400 AH (1980 AD) and another major restoration in 1422 AH (2001 AD) as part of the national heritage preservation program. Today, it stands as a prominent cultural symbol of Al-Rass, attracting visitors from across Saudi Arabia and beyond. The surrounding area includes stone walkways, rest areas, and informative plaques detailing its history and function.

Visiting Al-Shanannah Tower offers a glimpse into Saudi Arabia’s architectural heritage and the ingenuity of traditional builders. The site provides a serene atmosphere and stunning views, especially at sunset when the tower glows warmly in the golden light.
