Farm and well of Othman bin Affan

Bir Rumah, also known as Uthman’s Well, is one of the most significant historical and spiritual landmarks in Madinah. This sacred site dates back to the early days of Islam and was originally named after the noble companion Rumah Al-Ghifari Al-Kinani, a member of the Ghifar tribe from Kinana. The well later became closely associated with Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), the third of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, who purchased it during the Prophet’s ﷺ time when water was scarce in Madinah. Out of his generosity, he dedicated it as a charitable endowment (waqf) so that Muslims could drink freely from its water — a gesture that continues to symbolize his enduring legacy of benevolence and faith.

Situated in a fertile agricultural region surrounded by lush palm groves, the Well of Uthman bin Affan stands as a timeless emblem of Islamic generosity and communal welfare. The soothing sound of water flowing from the well, the shade of date palms, and the spiritual calm of the place together create an atmosphere that reflects both the simplicity and the greatness of early Islamic life. The site has been carefully maintained and restored over the centuries, preserving its authentic charm and religious importance for pilgrims and visitors alike.

Today, the well remains a popular destination for travelers and students of Islamic history who seek to witness a living example of Islamic endowment and charitable giving. It also serves as a serene space for reflection, faith, and connection to the spiritual values of Madinah’s sacred past.
